Internet:
The Internet is one of the best technologies given to mankind. It connects millions of computers all over the world and helps people share information easily.
Internet stands for International Network. It has made communication fast and easy and is used worldwide for education, business, and entertainment.
Uses of Internet:
1. News and Information
The Internet helps us read newspapers online and get information about different topics like politics, education, sports, science, etc. It keeps us updated with current events.
2. Art and Entertainment
Using the Internet, we can watch movies, listen to songs, play online games, read jokes, stories, and books. We can also download and buy software.
3. Online Shopping
The Internet allows us to buy items like books, clothes, and electronic goods from online shops without going to the market.
4. Mailing Letters (E-mail)
E-mail is the most popular feature of the Internet. It helps us send and receive messages instantly. We can also attach pictures, videos, and sound files with an e-mail.
5. Health and Fitness
The Internet provides health and fitness information. People can search for remedies, precautions, and information about diseases.
6. Tourism and Travel
The Internet helps in online booking of hotels, railway tickets, and air tickets at any time from anywhere.
7. Chatting
Chatting allows users to exchange text messages instantly with other people on the Internet.
8. Banking Operations
Using Internet banking, people can perform banking operations like checking balance, transferring money, and paying bills without visiting the bank.
9. Video Conferencing
Video conferencing allows people to communicate both verbally and visually from different locations using web cameras.
Requirements for Connecting to the Internet
To connect a computer to the Internet, the following are required:

Modem:
Modem stands for Modulator–Demodulator.
It is a device that allows a computer to send and receive data through telephone lines by converting digital data into analog signals and vice versa.
Types of Modem:
Internal Modem – Installed inside the computer on the motherboard.
External Modem – Installed outside the CPU and connected through USB port.
PC Card Modem – Designed for laptops; similar to a credit card and fits into a PC card slot.
The speed of a modem is measured in bps or kbps.
Telephone Line
A telephone line is used to connect the computer to an Internet Service Provider (ISP).
Internet Connection
An Internet connection is a service provided by an Internet Service Provider (ISP) in exchange for a fee.
Without subscribing to an ISP, we cannot access the Internet.

Types of Internet Connection:
1. Dial-Up Connection
It uses a telephone line to connect to the Internet. During usage, phone calls cannot be made or received. It is slow in speed.
2. Broadband Connection:
It provides high-speed Internet using wide bandwidth. It allows downloading videos, music, and photos quickly and does not disturb phone calls.
3. Cable TV Connection:
This connection uses cable TV lines and a cable modem to provide very fast Internet access.
4. Satellite Connection:
Used in areas where broadband is not available. It requires a satellite dish to connect to the Internet.
5. DSL (Digital Subscriber Line)
It uses copper telephone lines and allows Internet usage along with phone calls. It is a type of broadband connection and requires a monthly fee.
