📘 TENSES – CLASS 9 COMPLETE NOTES

🔹 What is Tense?

Tense shows the time of an action and its state (whether it is completed, ongoing, or yet to happen).

👉 There are 3 main tenses:

  1. Present Tense
  2. Past Tense
  3. Future Tense

Each tense has 4 types.


🟢 1. PRESENT TENSE

1.1 Simple Present Tense

🔸 Structure:

  • Subject + V1 (base form) / V1 + s/es (for he/she/it)

🔸 Uses:

  • Daily routine
  • General facts
  • Universal truth

🔸 Examples:

  • She plays cricket.
  • The sun rises in the east.

1.2 Present Continuous Tense

🔸 Structure:

  • Subject + is/am/are + V1 + ing

🔸 Uses:

  • Action happening now
  • Temporary actions

🔸 Examples:

  • I am studying.
  • They are playing.

1.3 Present Perfect Tense

🔸 Structure:

  • Subject + has/have + V3

🔸 Uses:

  • Completed action with present effect

🔸 Examples:

  • She has finished her work.
  • I have eaten food.

1.4 Present Perfect Continuous Tense

🔸 Structure:

  • Subject + has/have been + V1 + ing + since/for

🔸 Uses:

  • Action started in past and still continuing

🔸 Examples:

  • I have been studying for two hours.
  • She has been working since morning.

🔵 2. PAST TENSE

2.1 Simple Past Tense

🔸 Structure:

  • Subject + V2

🔸 Uses:

  • Completed action in the past

🔸 Examples:

  • He went to school.
  • She wrote a letter.

2.2 Past Continuous Tense

🔸 Structure:

  • Subject + was/were + V1 + ing

🔸 Uses:

  • Action going on in the past

🔸 Examples:

  • I was reading a book.
  • They were playing.

2.3 Past Perfect Tense

🔸 Structure:

  • Subject + had + V3

🔸 Uses:

  • Action completed before another past action

🔸 Examples:

  • She had finished her work before dinner.

2.4 Past Perfect Continuous Tense

🔸 Structure:

  • Subject + had been + V1 + ing + since/for

🔸 Uses:

  • Action continuing for some time in the past

🔸 Examples:

  • He had been studying for two hours before the exam.

🟡 3. FUTURE TENSE

3.1 Simple Future Tense

🔸 Structure:

  • Subject + will/shall + V1

🔸 Uses:

  • Future actions, promises, decisions

🔸 Examples:

  • I will go to school.
  • She will help you.

3.2 “Going to” Future

🔸 Structure:

  • Subject + is/am/are + going to + V1

🔸 Uses:

  • Planned actions

🔸 Examples:

  • I am going to visit Delhi.

3.3 Future Continuous Tense

🔸 Structure:

  • Subject + will be + V1 + ing

🔸 Uses:

  • Action that will be in progress in future

🔸 Examples:

  • I will be studying at 8 PM.

3.4 Future Perfect Tense

🔸 Structure:

  • Subject + will have + V3

🔸 Uses:

  • Action completed before a certain future time

🔸 Examples:

  • She will have completed her work by tomorrow.

⚠️ IMPORTANT RULES

🔸 Rule 1: Use of “Since” and “For”

  • Since → point of time (since morning, since 2020)
  • For → duration (for 2 hours, for 3 days)

🔸 Rule 2: Subject-Verb Agreement

  • He/She/It → verb + s/es
  • I/You/We/They → base verb

🔸 Rule 3: Helping Verbs

  • Present → is, am, are, has, have
  • Past → was, were, had
  • Future → will, shall
